3 Killed in Stampede at Chinnaswamy Stadium

The event, organized to mark RCB’s long-awaited IPL title win, descended into chaos as overcrowding and lack of crowd control triggered panic and confusion among thousands of attendees.

What started as a festive celebration of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s historic IPL win ended in devastation on Tuesday. A massive crowd gathered at Bengaluru’s iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium for a special victory parade and felicitation ceremony. Unfortunately, poor crowd management and overcrowding led to a deadly stampede that claimed the lives of seven fans and injured several others.

Fans Climb Stadium Walls to Catch a Glimpse of RCB Stars

Thousands of die-hard RCB supporters arrived at the stadium hours before the event, eager to witness their team being honoured.

Such was the frenzy that fans were seen climbing over walls and fences of the M Chinnaswamy Stadium to secure a view. The atmosphere was electric, with chants of “RCB! RCB!” echoing through the air despite weather conditions threatening to dampen the mood.

The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) had organised a grand felicitation ceremony to honour every member of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru squad. However, the sheer volume of attendees caught organisers and security personnel off guard.

Rain Adds to Chaos, But Fans Remain Unmoved

Even as heavy rains lashed parts of Bengaluru city, fans remained undeterred. Soaked to the bone, they stood their ground, hoping to catch a glimpse of their favourite cricketers.

Visuals from inside the stadium showed swelling crowds pushing through barricades and forcing their way past security. The passion turned into panic when sections of the crowd surged uncontrollably, leading to a stampede near one of the gates.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, but for seven individuals, help came too late. Several others sustained injuries and were immediately shifted to nearby hospitals.

KSCA’s Grand Plans Crumble Amid Overcrowding

The felicitation ceremony was meant to be a moment of pride for the city and its cricket lovers. The KSCA had extended open invitations to fans, hoping to turn it into a public celebration.

But crowd control proved to be a critical failure. Without enough police and safety measures in place, the situation spiraled dangerously. Witnesses described scenes of confusion, with people screaming, stumbling, and collapsing as the pressure of the crowd became unbearable.
